Tesla Model Y 'Juniper' Rolls Out in Malaysia

Tesla has commenced deliveries of its refreshed 2025 Model Y, codenamed "Juniper," in Malaysia. The updated electric SUV features a redesigned exterior with a full-width light bar inspired by the Cybertruck and Cybercab designs. Interior enhancements include a rear-seat touchscreen and improved materials. The Model Y is available in two variants: Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) priced at RM195,450 and Long Range All-Wheel Drive (LR AWD) at RM242,450. This launch marks a significant step in Tesla's expansion within Southeast Asia.

Tesla Faces Intensifying Competition from BYD

n the first quarter of 2025, Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has surpassed Tesla in several key performance metrics. BYD sold over one million EVs, outpacing Tesla's deliveries, which fell by 13% year-over-year. Additionally, BYD's net income rose sharply to $1.26 billion, doubling Tesla’s adjusted net income. While Tesla's stock has seen a temporary boost due to its focus on autonomous vehicles and the upcoming robotaxi program, the company faces challenges including an aging EV lineup and production issues with the Cybertruck.

Tesla's Robotaxi Initiative Under Scrutiny

Tesla's planned launch of its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, is drawing attention from regulators. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has requested detailed information about the development and deployment plans of the autonomous fleet, particularly concerning performance in adverse weather conditions. The initial rollout is expected to be an invite-only pilot featuring 10 to 20 vehicles, with significant reliance on teleoperators to manage situations where the autonomous system may struggle. This approach has sparked debate over safety and the extent of remote control in autonomous vehicles.
